Transformation through Education, Culture, and Agroecology

The Juçara Educational and Cultural CenterThe Juçara Educational and Cultural Center, located in the Santa Maria Settlement, has the primary mission of providing quality education, art, and leisure in the rural area while addressing the negative impacts of conventional agricultural practices. Founded in 1986, the settlement covers a total area of 1,407.92 hectares, divided among 60 families. The local community, composed of rural workers and small-scale farmers, faces significant socioeconomic challenges.

Local Challenges and Reality
Despite having a considerable number of children and adolescents, the settlement offers few recreational and educational opportunities. This lack of options makes young people vulnerable, exposing them to violent environments and hindering their personal and professional development. The absence of cultural and educational activities limits their prospects and perpetuates cycles of poverty and exclusion.

Additionally, the community faces various environmental impacts from conventional agricultural practices, including:

  • Deforestation and biodiversity loss;
  • Soil degradation due to improper management;
  • Contamination by agrochemicals, affecting both the environment and human health;
  • Monoculture farming, increasing dependency on chemicals and reducing genetic diversity in crops;
  • Socioeconomic inequality.

Project Objectives

The Juçara Educational and Cultural Center aims to address these challenges by transforming the local reality through integrated educational and cultural actions. Its main goals include:

  1. Promoting the Agroecological Transition:
    • Conducting theoretical and practical workshops on agroecological techniques, focusing on sustainable cultivation and management practices.
  2. Creating a Space for Education and Leisure:
    • Establishing an open space for all community members, including children, youth, and adults. This includes setting up a community library, hosting events and courses, and creating a space for knowledge exchange.
  3. Valuing Afro-Indigenous Culture:
    • Rescuing and strengthening local traditions through capoeira, dance, music, and cinema classes, fostering cultural identity and a sense of belonging.
  4. Generating Income:
    • Project activities will strengthen the economic foundation of participating families by providing new employment and income opportunities.
    • By integrating education, art, and sustainability, the Juçara Educational and Cultural Center not only offers tangible solutions to the community's challenges but also fosters a conscious, resilient, and culturally connected generation. The project stands as a beacon of transformation for the Santa Maria Settlement, driving social and environmental development in the region.
